View Full Version : Front Lateral Raises

I've always don't front lat raises with the dumbbell parallel to the floor (palm down), like this: http://exrx.net/WeightExercises/DeltoidAnterior/DBFrontRaise.html
But I found this way to do it on exrx.net : http://exrx.net/WeightExercises/Supraspinatus/DBFrontLateralRaise.html with the dumbbell perpindicular to the floor, with the pinky on top.
Is one way better than the other, or are they just hitting different muscles?
I like them both, so instead of doing 4 sets of the first one, I have been doing 2 sets of each. :D

I am not sure I see the point in doing them the last way. Seems you'd really limit the weight you could use and it feels very unnatural.
Then again, I don't even do front laterals anymore.

not sure why they called the 2nd one db front lateral raise when it looks like that motion targets the rear delt more...I like the motion of the 1st one but do it to the sides bc it helps contract delts more when dropping the thumbs while going up...I don't do much front raises bc I hit front delts from pressing movements from doing chest/shoulders

that's exactly how I do it but bring dbs to my sides instead of in front of me...

I don't do fronts for the same reason Big B said. Front delts take a pounding in so many other exercises. I do side laterals and bent over rear laterals to finish rounding out the shoulders.

I used to do frontal raises with a plate or one big dumbell instead of two dbs. Due to an old injury, I find it really difficult to do shoulders properly and nowadays, I do seated lateral raises at the machine.

but back to the topic of the front lateral raises.... the manager at my old gym was "showing" me how to do them.... he told me "this is the kind of exercise that seems easy, but gets really heavy in a hurry... You might want to start out doing them with the 3lb dumbbells" :mad: So I grabbed the 15 lbs and did them with those... :finger2
