OK, folks, my laptop has been reformatted and I lost all my bookmarks and the url's of the boards ..
I thought my laptop had a big memory but there are only 512MB there. Do you think that buying more memory would boost it? (it's a 3 years-old ACER Aspire 3681.

Yes if it can take more memory it would definitely help it.

I bought a 2 gigas stick for $30. Let's hope that it's worth it ;)

kragon, my mini ASUS laptop is great but the problem is that there is no dvd player or anything .. that said, it's really light (+/- 1 kg) and small (easy to carry with me on a train for ex). I'll be in the U.S. in May and I'll see what I can find.

If you are staying at a friend's house, order from Newegg.com - Computer Parts, PC Components, Laptop Computers, Digital Cameras and more! (www.newegg.com). You can get a great deal on a laptop.
Or bestbuy has some decent ones, but they are overpriced. Shoot, even Wal-Mart has some laptops that will do the trick.

Pete told me that Lenovo makes good laptops but I didn't see any in my country. That site is great, CakeNinja, thank you!

Bumping this to the top. I think that my ACER is getting old and I'm in the U.S. right now looking for a new laptop. I'll stop at Best Buy and other stores later this week. Some guys told me to buy a Dell but I don't feel comfortable ordering a laptop online. I'd prefer to fiind one at a store. Any ideas?

I don't do much on it except surfing the boards, sending and answering emails, chatting on yahoo and watching movies. The budget would be around 500 to 600 dollars. That's about what I paid for my ACER Aspire years back.

checkout slickdeals.net and do a search for "Laptop" or "notebook". you should find plenty of nice dual cores and possibly some newer i3's or i5's under 600.00 stay away from an amd processor in a laptop... there mobile chips suck balls compared to intel

Don't buy a Dell!
The owner of the studio that I rent in NY told me that Dell laptops are not built to last ... She likes her Toshiba.

Do some research...Dell has a ton of major issues and customer dissatisfaction. I bought an HP and couldn't be happier. Best Buy has some good deals if you catch stuff on sale. Just don't let them load all their bs on your pc!

Thank you for your help on this, bighun :)
I've heard that Lenovo is a good brand (somebody said that it's actually IBM that makes these laptops but I'm not sure it's true). I'll go to BestBuy tomorrow and see what I can find. Should I go for a 3GB memory or 4GB?

dont worry to much about the memory. if you are going with say win 7 32 bit then 4gb really wont be utilized and 3gb would be fine. that being said not alot of laptops come with 3gb as that would mean using a 1gb stick and a 2gb stick. asus makes pretty good laptops for the money and so does msi. i picked up an a5000 @ office max for 350.00 came with a dual core celeron which is basically a newer c2d with less cache. if i were you i would stick to a newer gen core 2 duo (the ones with the 266mhz fsb) im not a big fan of best buy, they try to sell you shit for hundreds of dollars you can do on your own in less than 10 minutes of research. and they normally have outrageous prices unless you catch them in a spectacular sale. i would try to look for a frys or just buy online and get it shipped. like i said. check out slickdeals.net and checkout what laptop deals you can find. try to get the highest res. screen possible for the size you want. also Hdmi out is great if you want to hookup to an lcd or plasma tv and watch movies and shit directly on your laptop. try to get a dedicated graphics. stay away from an intel gma4500 or any other intel branded graphics. go with an nvidia or ati mobile graphics for best live streaming and movie watching abilities. try to get a 7200 rpm hard drive as its quite a bit faster than the5400 rpm but it will drain the batts a little bit faster. also you may want to stay away from a glossy screen if you want to keep glare down.

btw lenovo is basically ibm and i think produce the nicest laptops out besides the the sli clevo's and the d900f clevo but these are basically the fastest and most power laptops ever built.

OK, I went to Best Buy earlier and the Lenovo at 529$ looks terrible ... I spotted a Toshiba at 579$ (it's very light, 3.3lbs, has a 13" screen but no dvd player, a 4GB memory and Windows 7), there was another one at 529$ (the screen is wider, it has a 4GB memory and a dvd player, and Windows 7). I'm leaving the U.S. on Monday, so I won't have much time for shopping. I hope that my ACER will last until August (I'll be in NY then and can find bigger shops and better deals ... maybe). I could order one online, bighun but the shipping to Europe would be really high ...

you should be able to find something over there. check out Laptop Forums and Notebook Computer Discussion (http://forum.notebookreview.com) and search there boards for European retailers... asus makes good products as well. the little 13" you suggest is prolly more like a netbook with a low wattage slow processor horrible at multitasking. if you intend to do any video encoding for watching high def. stay away from anything other than a full fledged core 2 duo. do a google search for a microcenter or frys near your zip code you are staying. if no luck i would keep researching and pick one up when you come back. lenovo is more of a business class notebook. its sturdy, well built, not all flashy like alot of others. but at that price i wouldnt expect much from lenovo. toshiba are nice but in the "under 600" range i would say MSI or Asus may be your best bet for bang for buck.
