Workers forced to take unpaid vacations - U.S. business- msnbc.com (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/28439267)

NEW YORK - Here's the vacation no one wants, courtesy of the recession: Forced time off without pay.
Financially struggling universities, factories and even hospitals are requiring employees to take unpaid "furloughs" — temporary layoffs that amount to one-time pay cuts for workers and a cost savings for employers. This year, the number of temporarily laid off workers hit a 17-year high.
"If they do it once, I think it's easier for them to try to do it again," said Carrie Swartout, who researches traumatic brain injuries at the University of Maryland Medical Center. Maryland is requiring unpaid time off for 67,000 of its 80,000 employees as it struggles with a budget crisis. The state says the furloughs will save an estimated $34 million during the fiscal year.

It's funny these companies want you to take time off without pay, but then want to fire you if you try to take a day off:rolleyes:

Better than when they force you to work a day and just give you "leave time" instead of pay.

I deal with this all the time at my job...have to work this Saturday...so I get an extra dAy off next week...big f-ing deal..we are already on a compressed work week..so I only work 4 days a weEk right now...so next week I will work 3...that would be great if I had some money to go spend when I am off...BUT I DON'T CAUSE THE CHEAP BASTARDS WON'T PAY ANY FREAKING OVERTIME ... :swear...sorry...feel much better now..

Been there done that I just had a long unpaid vacation. It comes with the territory its hard to do but its good to have a few months saved up for hard times.

My husband had to do it for a long time. One day of each pay period was paid out in leave time instead of getting paid. It solved a short term budget problem for his employer, but in the long run they really screwed themselves. Now he has all of those hours saved up, and he won't use them until he gets close to retirement. He's already had a promotion or 2 since, and will promote at least one more time before he retires. By the time they have to start paying him for those hours, it's quite likely that he will be earning 3x what he was earning when they withheld the pay in the first place. :D

Very true, my company isn't like this all the time sometimes when they are angry they do what they want.
