So yesterday I am doing close grip press, the way my gym is the 1/2 rack is only a few feet directly in from of the one bench I was on.

Anyways this kid comes up, puts 185 on to start incline. I'm like damn for a small guy not bad. Until I see how he does it.

Not only did he have the bench setup god awfully wrong IMO, he only lowered the bar a few inches. I bet he was a good 6" away from his chest at the closest!

He went up weight several times with the same form, I damn near wanted to say something but kept it to myself.

Next I see him while I'm doing DB kickbacks doing decline bench db's. Now our db's only go up to 100 lbs but for a little young guy that would be impressive. I look at his setting, the bench is at it's maximum setting, to the point you have no real movement if you know what I mean. I then look at how he's doing it, exactly the opposite of how I do. With the combo of having the bench all the way declined and turning the db's to a standard press motion from start he was only having to move a couple of inches.

This kid could barely pick the db's up, but here is huffing out a few pathetic reps. All for show, no doubt about it. I so wanted to say something, but I kept my mouth shut. Finished up what I was doing and went down stairs to the cables laughing more than a bit on the inside :D

LOL!!

On one note here, I never touch the bar to my chest, Im paranoid tho, so i go half way when Im doing a bar freeweights, unles si have a spot, reason being, Ive had my lungs collapse on me once, not during benching, but either way, I dont want that to happen again lol, so I usually go down half to a bit more than half way, hold it then push up fast..(slow when down motion)

On the flip side, you get guys bouncing the bar of their chest..

IMO thats worse that going less than half way, it only takes a tad to collapse yer lungs, or crush yer chest, or possibly even stopping your heart. Ive seen guys bouncing 315 off their chest, and Im thinking to my self, that guy'z gonna die. The kid doing less than half reps will prolly kink the crap out of him self, hurt him self, but at least I dont think he will kill him self, altho , yes, he should be lifting allot less weight. Going heavy too quickly aint gonna help :p

Yes bouncing is bad, not going down fully 'within an inch of touching' though is kind of a waste isn't it?

I go down until my arms are parallel from the floor it puts me about 5 inches away from my chest. For my anything beyond that as in going down to my chest is to much and unnessarily strain on my shoulders. Try it grim i bet you get some relief from your shoulder pain over the years of traning you limit the range of motion

I always touch the chest, usually can feel it press slightly on my skin then pound it back up, my reps are only about 3/4 of a full rep how ever I never go all the way up that's when I feel the strain on my shoulders and elbows

I know they say you should not go all the way up, I however do as I have the mentality of it's not a full rep until you do.
